Trained students and volunteer physicians will be conducting free screenings, where participants can learn more about their current health through test and a 1-on-1 physician consultation. Last year, KDSAP screened over 40 participants and was received with great excitement and approval that urged the continuation of the wonderful and well-needed service.

Dinner on ACC: Celebrating the Self-Starters Among Us

Amherst Community Connections is excited to host Holyoke City Councilor, Nelson Roman, as the guest of honor for our event, "Dinner on ACC: Celebrating the Self-Starters Among Us", to be held on Friday, February 24, 2017.

Roman has served as the Holyoke Ward 2 City Councilor since January of 2016. He has described himself as a "bilingual, Latino, Roman Catholic and a proud, openly gay male." He is HIV positive and is the Assistant Director at Lorraine's Soup Kitchen and Pantry in Chicopee MA.

In his life, Roman has had experience with homelessness, but through SNAP, HomeBase subsidies, and perseverance, he was able to stabilize his life and housing.

In his elected position, he strives to be a genuine advocate for his community. Outside of his office, Roman continues in community building work including his position as a part time case manager at AWAKE Springfield, which helps to redirect young people away from violence.

The event will begin at 4:00PM with dinner. Later, the program will feature different speakers including Councilor Roman, who will share their experiences with attendees. The program is expected to end at about 5:30PM. All are welcome to attend.
