STOP & SHOP COMMUNITY BAG PROGRAM

We are so excited to share that Amherst Community Connections has been selected to be a part of the Stop & Shop Community Bag Program, which is designed to make it easy for customers to contribute to their local community while supporting the environment.

For the month of July, each time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at the Stop & Shop located at 40 George Hannum St, Belchertown, MA 01007, $1 will be donated to our organization, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag. This is a great way to raise awareness, support the environment and fundraise for our cause.

Free Kidney Screenings

In partnership with Amherst Community Connections (ACC), the Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) at Amherst College will once again provide free kidney screenings on Saturday April 13th 2019 at ACC. It will be from 12:30PM to 4:00PM. ACC is located downtown on 236 N Pleasant Street, Amherst, MA.

Kidney disease is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, but its symptoms do not appear until a very late stage when serious treatment is required. To catch the disease early, trained Amherst College students will measure height, weight, blood pressure, blood glucose, and urine content. All measurements are completely optional. A volunteer physician will then meet 1-on-1 with participants to offer health advice. Said Jacob Gendelman, one of the current KDSAP co-presidents: “Providing free kidney screenings through KDSAP over the past three years has been an incredibly rewarding opportunity to serve the Amherst community. As a student I sometimes feel I can’t make a difference until I get out into the ‘real world.’ KDSAP has offered a way to truly make a difference in the town of Amherst.”

Amherst Community Connections will host the screening. “ACC is glad to be part of the community’s effort to help educate the public about kidney health. This is our third year participating. The event has been very well received,” said Hwei-Ling Greeney, ACC’s executive director.

Screenings will take less than an hour, and free bus passes will be offered to participants. The screening is completely open to all.
