Bella Halstead joined Amherst Community Connections for the second time on April 19 to share with us her love for art and inspire our inner artist. To begin our weekly Incubator Meeting, Bella had each of us draw a rough sketch of a place that we would like to be if we could be anywhere in the world. Community members drew scenes of themselves and friends on the beach, ocean landscapes, Paris, the forest, and more. Bella said, “work fast and don’t worry about it!” Even though we worked quickly on these pictures, they all came out fantastic.
Later, Bella showed us several different portraits of faces, and discussed the different techniques artists used to portray emotion in the faces. Some artists use very bold mediums and drew intense emotions on their faces while other artists took a more abstract approach and used soft lines.
After getting a feel for different portrait styles, we had the opportunity to try it ourselves. Community members chose to draw either a self-portrait or a portrait of someone else in the room. It was impressive to see all the talent in the room! Even though some of us would not consider ourselves artists, it was clear that we all have a creative side to us. Bella left us with a reminder that the most important thing about art is simply to have fun.
