For this week’s Incubator Meeting we received a talk and demonstration of reiki, from Sarah Crary and her colleagues. Reiki is a therapeutic technique, in which the person applying it uses physical touch to channel energy into their subject, to ultimately activate his or her natural healing process and achieve physical and emotional well-being. Sarah explained this technique can be used for any ailment: physical, meant or emotional. It can help with stress, insomnia, pain, and so on. While explaining the power and history behind reiki, Sarah had her fellow reiki masters practice the technique on our participants. Each participants received a 15 minute reiki treatment, as Sarah spoke. She explained that there are three levels of reiki training. On the first level, aspiring reiki masters receive their energy and learn a series of hand positions to use while giving treatment. They learn that it is not necessarily the position that matters most, rather it is the intent of the individual administering treatment; so long as the person’s touch is loving and healing is its intention, the treatment will be effective. On level two, they learn the different symbols of reiki, which can be used to send reiki from a distance, a practice similar to faith-based prayer. Once the trainee has reached level three, they become a reiki master.
Sarah explained that, while the idea of a healing touch may seem suspicious, reiki is becoming continuously more accepted in the medical community. Sarah believes that our natural skepticism can have a negative effect on treatment, referencing the fact that it works very well for animals because they do not receive reiki with full awareness or doubt. There are even reiki masters working in hospitals, including Cooley-Dickinson. Their training is legitimate, as is the technique itself. The reiki masters present were well-practiced. Each took a moment of silence to gather their energy before depositing it into those participants receiving. Sarah expressed her love of reiki, saying that no one has ever left a reiki treatment without a huge grin on their face. While you may need multiple treatments to fully-address an issue, you will leave the first treatment feeling refreshed. If you are feeling stressed or are experiencing any pain or discomfort, it may be time to look into the alternative healing power of reiki!
